This is the tenth in a series of corsages/boutonnieres I am making of this year’s flowers, grown here at our Victorian Gothic black dirt farmhouse, The Blawnut House, in the Hudson Valley in New York. I grow the flowers, photograph them, laminate them, and turn them into pins!
These hollyhocks are special because their seeds were collected on an island off the coast of New Hampshire called Star Island, on of my favorite places in the world. The 19th century hotel on the tiny island has a lot of similarities to our house here.
The pin measures 3 inches in diameter. There is a double center that makes it slightly three-dimensional with a stainless steel lapel pin fastener. Each pin is signed, numbered, and dated. Collect them all.
Hollyhocks are native to Europe and Asia and have deep roots, I mean really deep, making them helpful at preventing soil retention and maintaining the biomes stability. They are prolific pollinators - I saw a hummingbird drinking from them just this morning.
